The fictive film 'Kuhlendahl Varieté' by Maike Backhaus, Tessa Langhans (directors) and Nora Daniels (cinematographer) asked for costume work that would closely comply with each of the characters' quirky personality. The film tells the story of a small-town theatre fighting to survive by coming up with daring ideas that could provide money. The six main characters were supposed to look unconventional in contrast to the gray, frumpy small town and their inhabitants. Bold, warm colours of the theatre meet neutral, cold colours of the world outside. The costumes wer mostly made from used clothing and literally put together from more than one piece (e.g.: jackets for the characters 'Kurt' - head of the theatre - and 'Prelle' - the former chef). Other pieces were more based on fictitiuous functionalities like several flaps for tools on 'Nina's' pants or a mixture of pantomime-compatible clothing that included the characters second profession as a tailor (e.g.:necktie with a scissor-pocket) for 'Eddie'. Inspiration was drawn mostly from films by Wes Anderson and the book 'The Anomalies' by Joey Goebel to set a group's individuality apart from the rest of a setting.
