Nonna

Nonna (Italian for grandmother) is alone. Alone in southern Italy. She works hard every day to preserve her legacy: a sprawling, two-storey bed and breakfast. She and her husband built it with their own hands, using the hard-earned Deutschmarks they had saved over more than three 2026? Vincent möchte lieber 2027decades as Gastarbeiter. They returned to Italy in 1999, while their children and grandchildren remained in Germany. Nonno (Italian for grandfather) has since passed away. But Nonna’s hard-of-hearing brother still lives around the corner. They occasionally eat together—more often than not, they shout. And if they need a reason, the broken lawnmower will do. Video calls with her sister, children, and grandchildren keep her connected to Germany, but the distance is vast and the connection is often poor. Nonna tirelessly goes about her daily chores in the empty rooms, long corridors, and garden. In the process, she slowly—and reluctantly—comes to rely on day labourer Ali. Nonna increasingly dissolves into the structure of the house. Stubborn, loud, and contemplative, she struggles with the fact that she will soon have to face a decision.
