Degree show: Nikolas Müller – Team Inclusive

Auszug aus dem Text "Über das Mäandern" von Meike Eiberger anlässlich der Diplomausstellung von Nikolas Müller, 31. Januar bis 05. Februar 2023, Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln:

"Wenn sich die nasse Farbe über dem Papier ausbreitet, tut sich eine ganze Welt auf. Zwischen Zufall und Einfall, Loslassen und Festhalten, Wollen und Können entfaltet sich der künstlerische Kosmos von Nikolas Müller. Umspielt werden die Farbwolken von sich immer neu konstituierenden Linien. Auch sie sind im Werden begriffen, müssen noch zur finalen Form gelangen. Statt den Farbfeldern Grenzen zu setzen, schließen sie diese in die Arme. Sie fügen sich organisch zu- und ineinander. Entlang der sich biegenden, windenden und umschließenden Linien mäandert unser Blick und wird dabei nicht müde an den satten Farbspielen, am Hin- und Her zwischen Abstraktion und Figuration. Wie der Fluss, der immer wieder über sein Ufer tritt (sofern er das Glück hat noch nicht aus kapitalistischen Interessen begradigt worden zu sein), tritt auch Müller immer wieder über die Grenzen. Persönliches wird festgehalten und zugleich mit aktuellen Diskursen oder der Tagespolitik ins Verhältnis gesetzt. Ironisches trifft auf harsche Realität. Es ist ein stetes Hin und Her — so wie das Leben selbst. […]
Wie die Farbe, so mäandert Müller mit uns zwischen seinen Gefühlen, Sehnsüchten und Beobachtungen. Meist werden wir offen von den membranartigen Farbflächen empfangen, können eintauchen mit unserem Blick und uns tief hineinziehen lassen in eine wattierte Welt. Diese kann jedoch nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass viel Schlechtes in ihr passiert, dass Schmerz unvermeidbar ist oder man vor lauter Versagensängsten nur noch den Kopf in den Sand stecken möchte. Und trotzdem gibt uns Müller stets (positive) Auswege an die Hand, seien es die ironischen Brechungen mit Stickern, die einen Metatext liefern oder einfach nur die glitzernden Pigmenten, denen ein Hauch Popkultur anhaftet. Es bleibt ein stetes Dazwischen, das es auszuhalten, aber vor allem zu entdecken gilt. Und so tun sich stetig neue Welten auf …"

EN Excerpt from "About the meander" by Meike Eiberger, written on the occasion of Nikolas Müller's diploma exhibition, January 31 - February 5, 2023, Academy of Media Arts Cologne:

"When the wet paint spreads across the paper, a whole world opens up. Nikolas Müller's artistic cosmos unfolds between coincidence and inspiration, letting go and holding on, wanting and being able. The clouds of colour are surrounded by lines that are constantly reconstituting themselves. The clouds are, too, in the process of becoming and still have to reach their final form. Instead of setting boundaries for the color fields, they embrace them. They organically fit together and into each other. Our gaze meanders along the bending, winding and enclosing lines and never tires of the rich play of colors, the back and forth between abstraction and figuration. Like the river that repeatedly overflows its bank (if it is lucky enough not to have been straightened out of capitalist interests), Müller also repeatedly overflows the borders between different shapes. Personal things are recorded and at the same time placed in relation to current discourses or daily politics. Ironic meets harsh reality. It's a constant back and forth — just like life itself. […]
Like the colour, Müller meanders with us between his feelings, longings and observations. Most of the time, we are openly welcomed by the membrane-like colour surfaces, can immerse ourselves with our gaze and allow ourselves to be deeply drawn into a quilted world. However, this cannot hide the fact that a lot of bad things happen in it, that pain is unavoidable or that one only wants to bury one's head in the sand because of fear of failure. And yet Müller always gives us (positive) ways out, be it the ironic refractions with stickers that provide a metatext or simply the glittering pigments that have a touch of pop culture about them. There remains a constant in-between that has to be endured, but above all discovered. And so new worlds are constantly opening up. . . ."
