KRIEG UND FERNSEHEN / THE BATTLE SCREEN

The 1991 Gulf War was the first televised war in history. "There are changes in the military order, just as there are changes in the political order. In the meantime, diplomacy is only effective through interposed images. As a hostage of the televisual interface, the viewer becomes the recipient of a principle of insecurity", wrote Paul Virilio in 1991 in "L'Écran du Désert" (German title: "Krieg und Fernsehen"). We will use Virilio's analysis to approach the current militarized media order and to reflect about artistic interventions of audiovisual disarmament.
