Matthias Müller was born in 1961. He studied at Bielefeld University and Braunschweig University of Art (HBK). 


Guest professorships at Goethe University, Frankfurt/M., and at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Curatorial work, amongst others, for the Goethe Institute and the Max-Ophüls-Preis film festival. Juror in the film boards of North Rhine Westphalia, Hessen and Lower Saxony and in numerous festival juries. Individual films and videos since 1979, joint projects with Christoph Girardet since 1999. Festival participations in Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Toronto, Rotterdam etc.. Retrospectives at the New York MOMA, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Image Forum, Tokyo, and at various other institutions. His work has been honored with many awards including Prix du meilleur court métrage, Cannes, Preis der Deutschen Filmkritik, Deutscher Kurzfilmpreis, Preis des Verbandes der Deutschen Kritiker, Marler Video-Kunst-Preis. Various solo and group shows. Müller's works are held in public collections such as, among others, Tate Modern, and Centre Georges-Pompidou.
