The Cologne African Film Festival 2026 (AFFK) will present the latest in African cinema as part of an extensive festival programme at the Filmforum in the Museum Ludwig from 17 to 27 September. Once again this year, the panel discussions with directors and artists will take place in collaboration with the Cologne Academy of Media Arts. During the artist talks, current topics relating to film policy and film practice will be discussed with the audience: „New Voices, New Forms – The African Documentary Today“ (18.09., 3:30 pm, more), „Who Heals When We Film?“ (23.09., 3:30 pm, more) und „Sudan Beyond the Headlines – Cinema, Memory and Resistance“ (25.09., 3:30 pm, more). The panels will take place in the KHM auditorium; admission is free.

What does it mean to make a documentary in Africa today and what can non-fiction do that fiction simply cannot? This panel brings together three filmmakers whose work shares an urgent commitment to truth-telling, but whose formal approaches could hardly be more different. Together, they represent a new generation of African documentary filmmakers who refuse inherited forms. Their work is formally restless, politically urgent, and deeply personal – asking not only what happened, but how a film can tell it, and who gets to survive the telling. A panel on form, freedom, and the futures of African non-fiction.
