The (In)Securitization of Queer Spaces

The power tools section at the Baumarkt, the club, the dyke bar, the ballroom and the house, the bathroom, the park, the mosh pit, the gayborhood, the couch, the app, the psychiatrist’s office, the closet, the archive, the museum, the university, the nation state, the streets… – where and what are queer spaces? How do queers talk about queer spaces? What makes a space queer? What spaces made queers queer?

With these questions in mind, we’ll be moving from 19th and early 20th century sexologist’s offices to the riots of the 1960s, through the ballrooms and cruising areas of the 1970s/80s, towards the 1990s and the www, and into discussions about violence and the securitization of queer spaces of recent decades.

Regular reading required, most texts will be in English, some in German. We’ll most likely speak English & Dinglish in the seminar.
