Wer macht die Stadt?! // Who Makes the City?!

Stadt entsteht nicht nur durch politische Beschlüsse, Planungen und Investitionen. Sie wird von Menschen gemacht: durch Nachbarschaften, das alltägliche Zusammenleben, durch politische, kulturelle und soziale Initiativen.

Im Seminar betrachten wir die Stadt als sozialen und transformativen Raum. Menschen mit unterschiedlichen Interessen, Erfahrungen und Zugängen treffen hier aufeinander und prägen die Stadt ebenso, wie sie von ihr geprägt werden. Dabei geht es auch immer um Macht, Konflikte und die Frage, wer & was sichtbar ist und wer & was nicht.

Durch eigene Beobachtungen, Spaziergänge, Gespräche und Recherchen untersuchen wir, wie Menschen städtische Räume wahrnehmen, nutzen und verändern. Wir fragen außerdem, welche Rolle Kunst und Gestaltung dabei spielen können. Fotografieren, Zeichnen, Modellieren, Dokumentieren und Kartografieren dienen uns als Werkzeuge, um urbane Formen und Bedingungen des Zusammenlebens sichtbar und damit verhandelbar zu machen.

Außerdem beschäftigen wir uns mit Projekten an der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Gestaltung, Stadtforschung und zivilgesellschaftlichem Engagement. Gemeinsam schauen wir auf Beispiele aus Köln und Berlin (u.a. Projekte von Osthof Kalk, Haus der Statistik, Kotti & Co) Die Themen Öffentlichkeit, Teilhabe, Verdrängung, Migration, Gemeingut, Selbstorganisation, Kommunikation und kulturelle künstlerische Produktion stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt.

Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Zusammenarbeit mit den Künstlern und Stadtforschern Boris Sieverts (Köln)(https://neueraeume.de) und Erik Göngrich (Berlin)(https://www.goengrich.de /  https://www.mitkunstzentrale.de), die sich mit Stadt als sozialem Prozess, und räumlichem Gebilde beschäftigen und die Wechselwirkungen zwischen beidem untersuchen.

Im Laufe des Semesters unternehmen wir Recherchen und entwickeln Kartierungen, Interventionen und publizistische Arbeiten. Ziel ist eine gemeinsame, experimentelle Publikation, die Gespräche, Prozesse und Positionen aus dem Seminar dokumentiert und zugänglich macht. Geplant sind Exkursionen in Köln und — bei Interesse — auch eine mehrtägige Exkursion nach Berlin.

Cities do not emerge solely through political decisions, planning processes, and investments. They are made by people: through neighborhoods, everyday forms of living together, and through political, cultural, and social initiatives.

In this seminar, we will explore the city as a social and transformative space. People with different interests, experiences, and forms of access encounter one another here and shape the city just as they are shaped by it. This also involves questions of power, conflict, and visibility: who and what becomes visible, and who and what does not.

Through our own observations, walks, conversations, and research, we will investigate how people perceive, use, and transform urban spaces. We will also ask what role art and design can play in these processes. Photography, drawing, modelling, documenting, and mapping will serve as tools for making urban forms and the conditions of living together visible—and therefore open to negotiation.

We will also engage with projects situated at the intersection of art, design, urban research, and civic engagement. Together, we will examine examples from Cologne and Berlin (including projects by Osthof Kalk, Haus der Statistik, and Kotti & Co). Topics such as the public sphere, participation, displacement, migration, the commons, self-organization, communication, and cultural and artistic production will be central to our discussions.

A particular focus will be on collaboration with the artists and urban researchers Boris Sieverts (Cologne) and Erik Göngrich (Berlin), whose work addresses the city as both a social process and a spatial formation, and explores the interactions between the two.

Throughout the semester, we will conduct research and develop mappings, interventions, and publishing projects. The goal is a collaborative experimental publication that documents and makes accessible the conversations, processes, and positions emerging from the seminar. Excursions to Cologne are planned and—depending on interest—a multi-day excursion to Berlin as well.
