DOCU SOUNDS

Dieses Seminar untersucht die Rolle des Klangs im Dokumentarfilm, in Video-Installationen und künstlerischen Projekten. Im Fokus stehen sowohl kreative als auch technische Aspekte. Die Studierendenanalysieren die dramaturgische Funktion des Sound Designs – von der Verwendung von Montage und Rhythmus bis hin zur Schichtung klanglicher Texturen – und erarbeiten, wie diese Elemente Wahrnehmung und Bedeutung beeinflussen. Am Ende des Semesters unternehmen wir eine Exkursion zur SoundTrack_Cologne, einer renommierten Fachmesse und Konferenz für Sound-Profis. Dort haben die Studierenden die Möglichkeit, aktuelle Trends, Arbeitsweisen und Innovationen in den Bereichen Sound Design, Field Recording und Filmmusik kennenzulernen. In einer Kombination aus theoretischen Diskussionen, der Analyse ausgewählter Filme und praktischen Übungen befassen sich die Teilnehmenden mit dem gesamten Prozess der Klanggestaltung. Themenschwerpunkte sind unter anderem Aufnahmetechniken im Feld, der Einsatz von Mikrofonen in unterschiedlichen Umgebungen, Strategien des Schnitts und Mischens sowie der Aufbau persönlicher Soundbibliotheken für zukünftige Projekte. Das Seminar versteht das Hören als aktiven und kreativen Prozess und ermutigt die Studierenden, Klang als narratives und expressives Gestaltungsmittel experimentell zu erforschen. GÄSTE: Cassis Birgit Staudt – Cassis ist Komponistin, Sängerin und Musikerin, die sich auf Filmmusik spezialisiert hat, aber mit ihrer ehemaligen Band b-blush und dem DJ-Projekt scratch’Nsniff (wörtlich: Beats mixen beim Backen von Süßigkeiten) durch die USA, Europa, Mexiko und Indien getourt ist. Sie wird uns auf der SoundTrack Cologne-Exkursion begleiten und führen. This seminar explores the role of sound in documentary film, video-installations and artistic projects. Focusing on both creative and technical dimensions, the course investigates how music, real sounds, and ambient soundscapes contribute to cinematic storytelling. Students will analyze the dramaturgical function of sound design — from the use of montage and rhythm to the layering of sonic textures — and examine how these elements guide perception and meaning. At the end of the semester, we will take part in an excursion to SoundTrack_Cologne, a renowned professional sound fair and conference, offering students the opportunity to experience current trends, workflows, and innovations in sound design, field recording, and film scoring. Through a combination of theoretical discussions, close analyses of selected films, and hands-on practice, participants will engage with the entire process of sound creation. Topics include field recording techniques, microphone use in diverse environments, sound editing and mixing strategies, and the building of personal sound libraries for future projects. The seminar emphasizes listening as an active and creative process, encouraging students to experiment with sound as both a narrative and expressive tool. GUESTS: Cassis Birgit Staudt April 16-18 Cassis is a composer, singer and recording artist who specializes in scoring films but has toured the US, Europe, Mexico and India with her former band b-blush and the DJ project scratch’Nsniff (literally: mixing beats while baking sweets). She will join and guide us on the SoundTrack Cologne excursion.
