Germany Scholarship at the KHM

The KHM Cologne would like to give talented and committed students more financial security for a successful degree course and support them with a Germany Scholarship.

Germany needs excellent young artists. That is why the federal government and private sponsors support committed and talented students with the Germany Scholarship. An investment in the future that pays off for everyone.

For every €1,800 raised by private donors, companies, foundations or associations, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research adds the same amount.

Funding is available to KHM students with outstanding artistic, academic or school achievements, special potential, social commitment and special personal or family circumstances who are enrolled as first-time students at KHM Cologne or are already enrolled as regular students and are not on leave of absence.

How much funding is available and for how long?

A scholarship generally comprises 300 euros per month for one year, at least two semesters. It is possible to reapply annually.  The maximum duration of funding is based on the standard period of study. The scholarship generally ends upon successful completion of studies.

The funding criteria in detail:

Scholarships are awarded based on performance, talent, commitment and need. The following are taken into account:

  • Academic performance (for enrolled students) or university entrance grade (for first-year students)
  •  Special achievements such as awards, professional experience or internships
  • Social commitment (e.g. voluntary work, involvement in university politics)
  • Personal circumstances (e.g. illness, caregiving responsibilities, migration background, single parenthood)

The ‘Deutschlandstipendium Award Committee’ proposes a ranking list for the awarding of scholarships to the Rectorate for decision-making.

Deadlines and procedures for funding

From now until 27 February 2026, 11:59 p.m., you can apply for the Germany Scholarship.

The prerequisite is that you have at least two semesters of study remaining (up to and including the 2026 summer semester).

The scholarship period covers six months from 04/2026 to 09/2026 inclusive, due to the start date at the KHM Cologne.

Seven scholarships are expected to be awarded. Two of these will be earmarked for "technical proximity or orientation of the

artistic approach (e.g. animation, 3D animation, aesthetics & new technologies)" and two for artistic photography.

Forms & application

The application forms can be found here and and in the left-hand menu.

Everyone involved benefits from the Germany Scholarship.

With your commitment as a sponsor, you can help talented students at our university receive a scholarship of €300 per month.

Private sponsors finance half of the scholarship. The other half is provided by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. In concrete terms, this means that with just £150 per month – £1,800 per year – you can finance an annual scholarship for a young, talented person.

The KHM acts as an intermediary and oversees the entire scholarship programme – from raising private funds and selecting suitable scholarship holders to paying out the scholarships.

Advantages for sponsors

  • You demonstrate social responsibility. The sponsorship is tax-deductible as a donation.
  • You gain visibility and other contacts: mention on the KHM websites and invitations to KHM events and special occasions (including use of the Deutschlandstipendium logo).
  • No administrative effort: KHM takes care of paying out the scholarships.

Yes, a second degree is eligible for funding.

Funding period (maximum) | How long can I receive the Germany Scholarship (maximum)?

The maximum funding period is based on the standard period of study for the respective degree programme. The scholarship is initially granted for one year and can cover a maximum of the standard period of study.

For sponsors

I would like to support talented students at the Academy of Media Arts and donate to the Germany Scholarship. Is this possible?
Yes, please feel free to contact us. Ideally, we are looking for sponsors who will regularly contribute €1,800 to a scholarship, which would be supplemented by €1,800 from the federal government. You would, of course, receive a donation receipt for the amount you contribute. We are also happy to accept smaller contributions – for example, ½ or ¼ of a scholarship.

Are sponsors named on the KHM Cologne website?
Yes. If you wish, we will be happy to include your name in the ‘Our thanks go to’ section of the information pages on the Germany Scholarship. However, it is not possible to include a link to your company or private website.
