El barrio prometido

Barceloneta, the beach district of Barcelona is caught in the crossfire: since the Olympic Games in 1992 the quarter has been brought to the attention of housing speculation. Due to the high value of their flats the long-established population of the quarter is under extreme pressure. Until now they are able to remain in the quarter thanks to their old tenancy agreements far below the current value. The city council of Barcelona is aiming for an extensive reconstruction of the quarter to achieve an optimal added value. However, this plan apparently excludes the original population. Therefore a group of residents is fighting for a socially acceptable model of urban managment. But one thing has outlasted all mutations: The Fiesta Major, the yearly great festivity in the quarter is being prepared and celebrated with unchangeable enthusiasm. The film attends the tide of events during the summer 2008 and gives an insight into the typical living in Barceloneta.
