Seminar description

Winter Semester 2025 sees the Live/Art seminar continue its practice of collectively reading and interrogating dramatic texts as a way of engaging with contemporary themes and historical theatrical traditions. This semester, the focus shifts to student-led productions, which are authored, directed and performed by the seminar participants. The framework takes inspiration from a format developed in Jamaica by the late theatre educator and director Brian Heap: ten plays, each ten minutes long, performed over the course a single evening. For Dramarama 5!, we will extend this format to include and prioritise performance and live art, performance poetry, and other forms of short time-based work.

Previous editions of Dramarama have featured works by Heiner Müller, Sarah Kane, Caryl Churchill, Howard Barker, and Omar el-Akkad. This new iteration will continue to build on that legacy through original student creations and expanded performance practices. It invites experimentation and encourages students to engage with form, content and embodiment in innovative and politically attuned ways.
