Working Girls are automata, robots, clones who know only one thing: how to do their job. They represent the clichés that turn women into consumer goods. But beneath the standardised, automated images lurks the possibility of dysfunction: a dysfunction caused by the restrictive nature of their jobs. They are ideal ‘machines,’ charged with a hysteria that briefly breaks through the veneer of hyper-functionality, only to be quickly repressed again.
