English title: Four Brides Year: 2005 Categories: Sound / Music, sound installation
Four electrical hand dryers with infrared sensors are installed in a row on a wall, just as in a regular washroom – the only difference being that they are attached aprox. 1.20 m over the floor only (at crotch height of the viewer). The devices function completely normally, as long as the approximation-sensor is activated. As a Readymade I take the hand dryers as an art object - each one is a sound sculpture in and of itself. Hanging next to each other in this particular way, the devices are transformed into an interactive sound installation, which deals ironically with contemporary issues in art theory and practice. Also the title ""four brides"" takes a specific position by undermining the very character of media art, which is often regarded as an exclusivly masculin domain because of it´s technological approach to artistic creation. The exhibition context is compared metaphorically with the public washroom, endangered by Vandalism.
