In 1994, a high school exchange takes Daniel from Germany to the Sonoran Desert. Here he meets his host family in the small town of Yuma, Arizona. A message more than a decade later prompts him to return there; after learning of the death of the host family’s eldest son Ray, in the Iraq War.
