Diopter Zero is inspired by a resurfacing childhood memory, recontextualized through the popularity of contemporary digital aesthetics such as liminal space and dreamcore. As a child undergoing vision tests from time to time, I experienced and was somehow obsessed with how my way of seeing and how my focus were directed by medical technological systems, as well as by the structure of the target image itself: a shared visual memory among many vision-impaired people looking into an autorefractor. By abstracting this experience into a CGI-based visual system of calibration, repetition, and controlled variation, the film wants to create a subtle in-between atmosphere that is eerie but calming, instantaneous yet lingering; at the same time, it reflects on how early internet collage-based digital aesthetics, globalized visual products, and the overuse of the eye as a dominant sensory channel shape contemporary modes of perception and the imagination of seeing.
