The Room of a Thousand Voices

This single-person immersive installation explores how memory and perception take shape within the lived history of a Cuban domestic room. Emerging from a material culture marked by scarcity, repair, and prolonged use, the work treats home as a living archive shaped by one family’s belongings, where objects retain marks of affection, adaptation, and endurance. The experience unfolds inside a carefully constructed domestic set held in complete physical darkness. Wearing a VR headset, the participant navigates the space through touch alone. What is seen aligns at times with what is felt, and at others diverges: the hand may encounter dust where an object seems whole, or reach toward a form that exists only visually. This perceptual tension shifts attention from recognition toward bodily engagement with the space. Across an accelerated day, the room gradually transforms. Time advances in a compressed rhythm as light, sound, scent, and texture evolve, and objects age in place. The space moves through the life stages of a family—from the beginnings of a young couple, through daily family routine, to later solitude—each phase reflecting a specific historical moment in Cuba. Set against a culture of constant stimulation and divided focus, the work invites slowness, trust in the body, and attention to small gestures. Its poetics take shape as a quiet resistance, creating a space where the bond between body, place, and the many voices held in ordinary things can be felt.
