Cleaning Cairo

The residents of the Cairene garbage area of Mokattam are the protagonists of this film. Garbage collectors, sorters and recylers are mainly Copts but also include some Muslims. They stand on the margins of the Arab Spring but are affected by its consequences nonetheless. Their hopes stand in stark contrast to their experiences with the Egyptian government in the last decades. Contemplating the past, members of the professional groups involved reflect on the everyday problems, the discrimination and the oppression they suffered during the era Mubarak.
