Halfway between Berlin and Prague, in the north of the Czech Republic, lies a dreamy, former German village called Hejnice. Against a beautiful village backdrop—with an impressive pilgrimage church, a communal cinema and an open-air pool—the people are looking for one thing in particular: their national identity. Together with the cinema owners, the villagers, the tourists and the 87-year-old German Otto Richter, we experience summer days that leave us with no doubt that world affairs can also play out in a provincial village.
