Seminar description

This seminar will draw connections between the body of cinematic work that came to be known as Third Cinema and its context in various manifestations of the political movement of Third Worldism from Bandung in Indonesia to the Tricontinental Conference in Cuba. Texts will include work from Vijay Prashad, Glauber Rocha's 'An Aesthetics of Hunger' and Fernando Solana and Octavio Gatino's Toward a Third Cinema. Readings will be on reserved in the library. The films will also be considered in light of the re-emergence of overt forms of imperialism and the wider conditions of political film-making today. The seminar will be conducted in English, and films will be subtitled in English. Students will be required to keep a weekly journal.
