The department of Art and Media Studies sees itself as a discourse space in which students and professors work together on critical-epistemological questions relating to aesthetics, politics, materialities as well as artistic and media practices. Their entanglements with bodies, collectives, communities and technologies are dealt with in different research fields by three professorships: "Transversal Aesthetics", "Art History with an Expanded Concept of Material" and "Queer Studies in Arts and Sciences". In addition, there are specific thematic focuses such as the Black Radical Tradition, Politics of Care, Critical Curating, Queerfeminist Science and Technology Studies, Artistic Research, and (Sub-)Cultural Studies.

The department is based at university level in terms of teaching and research and, in addition to continuous collaboration in artistic and creative project development, offers the opportunity to complete an academic doctorate (Dr.phil.). It maintains diverse relationships with university and non-university research institutions and organizes symposia, lecture series and publications.
