(im)print: Artists as Publishers as Artists, a workshop organized by the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in the Overstolzenhaus Library, Rheingasse 8, 50676 Cologne, on Friday 6th July 2018 from 10:30 to 16:00.

Publishing is an integral part of art (re)production: articulating artistic imaginaries, shaping communities and proposing alternative value systems and political horizons. While looking at precedent practices shaped and informed by particular historical, culturaand social circumstances, the workshop (im)print. Artists as Publishers as Artists intends to discuss different modes of publishing and their different collaborative and interactive forms. We will address issues of art publications, in a variety of formats, which are conceptually, formally and socially relevant.

What kind of discourse or affect do publications within artistic practices generate? Who publishes, for whom, and for which purpose? The workshop features three panels addressing the issues of publishing for artistic experimentationpublishing via collective values, and publishing to mobilize knowledge. With the participation of Clara Balaguer, Eva Weinmayr, Francesca Valentini, Gijs de Heij, Heike Ander, Lanfranco Aceti, Tamara Lorenz, (Tim), Tom Lingnau, and Yvette Mutumba.

WORKSHOP

10:30 – 10:45 Welcome

10:45 – 12:00 Publishing for artistic experimentation

Discussion with Francesca Valentini, Heike Ander, Tamara Lorenz, (Tim), and Tom Lingnau, moderated by Karin Lingnau

It is through art and aesthetics that we could open up the scope for exchange. Looking at publications from the perspective of artists and curators, the discussion will be focused on media, formats, and methods used in artistic publishing. How could these strategies resonate with other forms of public activity such as exhibiting, performing and presenting?

12:45 – 13:45 Publishing via collective values

Discussion with Gijs de Heij (OSP) and Lanfranco Aceti, moderated by Lilian Haberer

Commoning publishing production, distribution, and archives promote new labour structures as an effort to subvert the vertical roles in conventional workflows. Alternative and collaborative models of publishing actualize the notions of post-capitalist values of reproduction. What cultural approaches could be used to engage with sustainable participation?

14:15 – 15:15 Publishing to mobilize knowledge

Discussion with Clara Balaguer, Eva Weinmayr, and Yvette Mutumba, moderated by Agustina Andreoletti

Publications could become spaces where subjects and subjectivities meet by activating distributed cultural agencies. Socially relevant publishing models create the conditions for publicness and visibility of communities, which are sometimes underrepresented or even suppressed. If art intends to engage with the public realm and the formation of discourse, what resources and relations can be mobilized to make different voices public?

15:15 – 16:00 Open discussion

After the event, we invite you to the opening of the The Cologne Art Book Fair 2018, 19:00, Kölnischer Kunstverein, Hahnenstr. 6. The fair is taking place from 06.-08. july 2018.

With the participation of Clara Balaguer, Eva Weinmayr, Francesca Valentini, Gijs de Heij, Heike Ander, Lanfranco Aceti, Tamara Lorenz, (Tim), Tom Lingnau, and Yvette Mutumba.
