Film history and film theory

The professorship is intended to ensure a deepening and continuity of teaching in the field of historical developments of heterogeneous positions in film history and film theory - as an investigation of experiments, film language(s) and theories of cinema through to post-cinema and post-digital discourses and previously little researched or marginalized fields of film history. It is not the other side of practice, but sees itself as an integral part of artistic processes, which - at the latest since cinema became modern - must always refer to what already exists and what has already been thought.

Teaching areas include

- The teaching and questioning of existing approaches to film history and theory (such as economics, history of technology, social science studies, image and narrative structures in semiotic and image-historical research, explorations in the work of individual film artists*).
- Promotion of a critical-analytical understanding of film history and theory, which is understood as the result and mirror of social debates and the resulting positions that are constantly being renegotiated (in contrast to the perpetuation of a fixed canon).
