Prof. Dr. Kerstin Stutterheim became Rector of the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and professor of artistic research on a five-year contract on April 1, 2020.
Kerstin Stutterheim is a film, media and theatre scholar, a professor, filmmaker, dramaturg and author. She was the professor of media and cultural studies at Bournemouth University in the UK, where she also headed the Research Centre for Film and TV, between 2015 and her move to the KHM. From 2006 to 2015 she was the professor of dramaturgy of audio-visual media at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf and the founding director of the Institute for Artistic Research (IKF) there. From 2001 to 2006 she worked as professor of film/video at the faculty of design of the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt. Before, she worked as a freelance filmmaker, producer, dramaturg, artist and author.
Stutterheim studied theatre studies and cultural communication at the Humboldt University of Berlin (graduated 1989), where she also was conferred her PhD (Dr. phil., 1999). Her research specialisations include modern film dramaturgy as well as the examination of media presentation of aspects of societal relevance, such as diversity and equality. She ended in 2019 a documentary film as part of the research project about media presentation of Paralympians in the UK.
She also leads the international research initiative Worlds of Storytelling. She is a member of VeDra (Verband für Film und Fernsehdramaturgie e.V.), the Deutschen Filmakademie and the research initiatives Screenwriting Research Network (SRN) and the International Society of Female Professionals (ISFP), the Stanley Kubrick Appreciation Society and is a consultant for the British Academy/UNESCO UK – to name just a few.
She has been invited as a visiting professor to universities in Brazil, Canada, USA, Finland and Lithuania among others.
