Studying with a disability or chronic illness

The commissioners representing students with disabilities or a chronic disease support the universities in their task of meeting the special needs of students with impairments. Their work aims at providing equal opportunities and participation by creating a barrier-free environment and by giving advice on individual regulations for disadvantage compensation.

This applies to both physically disabled students as well as students with mental health problems. Especially students with imperceptible impairments or those with mental health problems often forgo support for fear of stigmatization.

As a commissioner for students with impairments, I am available to provide advice and support for all questions that arise in connection with their studies. The consultation is confidential and is of course subject to the obligation of secrecy.

Psychological counseling

All students of the Academy of Media Arts can take advantage of professional psychological counseling at the Academy for Applied Psychology and Psychotherapy (APP Cologne). It can be a crisis situation or simply the desire for a conversation with a competent person in which you are supported in developing coping strategies.

Topics for psychological counseling can include

    Exam nerves
    Motivational problems
    Social difficulties
Doubts about the choice of studies
    Decision-making and self-reflection
    Learning and working techniques
    Time management problems
    Coping with stress
    Conflicts with students/teaching staff

If necessary, an initial consultation can be arranged in the psychotherapeutic outpatient clinic of the APP Cologne before starting psychotherapy.

The individual consultation takes place at the APP Cologne (Hauptstraße 305, 51143 Cologne-Porz) by individual arrangement. Please contact Katharina Ise (Psychologist, M.Sc.) by e-mail (
ise@app-koeln.de) to make an appointment.
