Exophony – a relatively new term (from 2007) to describe a much older phenomenon: writing in a language that is not a first language. Linguist Molly Martin suggests "Exophonic writing offers authors the chance to cloak themselves in a different language, and thereby culture," implying a complicated relationship between language, identity and heritage.
In this theory seminar, we will read a variety of author’s approaches, explore why, when and how authors change their writing language and ask questions such as what exophonic and translingual writing do to texts, the reception of the authors’ works, and language itself. We will also take an excursion to exophony in film. If required, the seminar will be held in English and German.
