Seminar description

"We are confronted directly by the production of the materiality of gender. Everything is a matter of doses, of melting and crystallization points, of the rotary power of the molecule, of regularity, of milligrams, of the form and mode of administration, of habit, of praxis." (Paul Preciado)

Plethysmographs, brain scanners, imaging devices, viewing time trackers, hormone level measuring, tomographs, DNA tests, measuring tape, computers… – high- and low-tech devices involved in the categorization and normalization of sex_gender_sexuality seem to be an ever growing field of scientific technologies. How are all these measuring and imaging devices co-constitutive of the categories that we call sex, gender, and sexuality? Can brain scanners really 'read' your sexuality? Is sexual subjectivity produced in labs? Do we live in an era of ‘pharmacopornographic capitalism’, as Paul B. Preciado calls it? Are we being neurogendered? And what in the world is a 'penile plethysmograph'?

In the seminar, we will look at the complex assemblage of materialities, technologies, lab technicians, scientists, neurologists, endocrinologists, sexologists, and people being scanned and measured, that produces and keeps up the binary sex_gender_sexuality system.

The seminar is open to people from Hauptstudium and Grundstudium.

It will be possible to join the seminar on Zoom. If you want to join on Zoom, please email me. If you’ll join live, just come to the first session on 26.10.2022.
