Peter Friedrich Stephan is a designer and consultant. His projects focus on digital and social transformation. He researches the relations of stakeholders, concerns and artefacts and develops new formats for systems and services. His methods include a series of self-developed open source tools such as the »Concern Canvas« and the »Hypercycle of Transformation« (www.designingconcerns.org).


Peter‘s new book »Designing Concerns – Bruno Latour und das Transformation Design« (Transcript Verlag) will be published in summer 2023. He wrote 50+ papers on transformation and cognitive design and edited two books »Knowledge Media Design« (2005) and »Events and E-Commerce« (2000).


After studies of design, business communication and music in Berlin and New York, Peter was a pioneer of experimental and commercial projects in multimedia design. In 1994 he co-founded a university program in Computational Design. In 1997 he was appointed full professor for »Multimedia, Electronic Publishing and Networks« at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, a position that became »Transformation Design« in 2015. In 2002–2013 Peter was a guestlecturer for »Leadership in Digital Communication«, a master program at the University of the Arts Berlin and the University St. Gallen/Switzerland.


His research includes: 2008–2009 »Intelligent Objects« (funded by the National Academy of Science and Engineering – acatech), 2002–2004 »Medienquadrat« (funded by the Federal Ministery of Education and Research – BMBF), 1994–1996 »Cognitive Aspects of Visualization«, Research Cluster »Bits–Bilder–Bedeutung« (funded by the Ministery of Innovation, Science and Research Northrhine-Westfalia). Peter also served as a consultant for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, FWF – Wissenschaftsfonds Österreich, and DEGinvest.
