The conception and structuring of television formats has a great tradition at the KHM. The rules and techniques of traditional live broadcasting are imparted in the foundation seminar Live Directing.

In this, the formal possibilities of television are addressed: from magazine programmes and talk shows to the live broadcasting of music and sports events. Students take turns carrying out the various functions involved in practical exercises: camera operator, live cutter, live director, editorial roles and presenter.
In the main course, concepts for new formats are developed and produced – in doing so current distribution channels and design possibilities offered by the Internet and VOD are discussed intensively – and the results then presented to be critiqued by editors and production companies.
