ERBSCHAFT embarks on a search for traces of the absent, whose remains are still present in prosperity. Scanning the narrative potential of objects like a crime scene, the film explores empty spaces: to what extent do objects and their traces of use reveal a history of origin and a prophecy of the future, suggest, lure us onto false trails or seduce us into wishful thinking? On the one hand, this documents the process of decay of a living space, how its stories sneak out quietly but are nevertheless passed on and reproduced. On the other hand, the attempt to remember is reflected as one that always starts from the present and is linked to imagination, desire, hope, delusion and repression (and much more). The question arises as to whether remembering always falsifies memory, what forces are at work and whether remembering, as with analog photography, overwrites a place that has already been occupied. ERBSCHAFT attempts to reflect aspects of German remembrance culture by means of remembering through all kinds of found objects in the house, which is slowly being picked apart, as well as the fact that it is not only as well as the fact that not only holcaust-witnesses are dying out, but also a generation of perpetrators, and considers the extent to which the disappearance of the perpetrators from the space enables a different form of remembering, imagining, conjecturing and storytelling. And above all: who will take which heritage? And who will accept it?
