Xiaolu Guo

Xiaolu Guo is a renowned Chinese British filmmaker and novelist.


She has directed a dozen films, including How Is Your Fish Today (Sundance Official Selection 2007) and UFO In Her Eyes (TIFF 2010). Her feature She, A Chinese received the Golden Leopard Award at the Locarno Film Festival 2009. We Went to Wonderland premiered at the 2008 New Directors/ New Films at MoMA in NYC. Her documentary Five Men and A Caravaggio premiered at the London and Rotterdam Film Festival and showed in many international film festivals and art galleries including the National Gallery in Washington DC. She had film retrospectives at London’s Whitechapel Gallery, Cinématheque Switzerland, and the Greek Film Archive.


She is also an award-winning writer. Her novels include A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, and I Am China. Her memoir Once Upon A Time In The East
won the National Book Critics Circle Award 2017. Her most recent non-fictions are Radical, and My Battle of Hastings, published by UK Random House 2024. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
