Mirage

The empty room, other than the sound of the artist´s breath and a spotlight projected on the wall, functions as a metaphor for the body: Every draw of breath becomes a ,light-flooded rebirth’, every exhale a ,presentiment of death black as night’. One experiences the effect of an obvious staging, which enacts an oppressive analogy in the real world. The organic element is bound directly to the electronic; the sound of breathing, translated through light and darkness, manipulates the breath of the viewer. Franziska Cordes enables the effectiveness of subjective projection an impact at the center of her installation - in the same instance having the adept ability to dismantle said impact with an ironic resolve. The promising mise-en-scene or staging of light brings about the construction of an empty space. Concurrently, her real construction of truth is subverted. The cinematic element which is suggested through the composition, is a mirage. The empty space and this mirage are a condition for the mind-projection of the active spectator in turn. „Silencio - there is no band. Everything is a recording. It´s just ilusion.“ (Mulholland Drive) One steps into a nocturnal museum: the technique is working, the spot awakes, the audience is just absence. Translation: Timothy Shearer
