Once upon a time, A caravan passed our village and left a pregnant woman behind... She gave birth to a child, left it at the stable by the road, and hanged herself by the mountain spring... An old widow found her cow breast-feeding a baby girl: Tongue-tied, crazy Maria! A bastard, an orphan. From a bad father, and even worse mother! She can hear a fish and understand a raven! Doesn’t talk, but sings. When she sings it’s raining, and the sun shines when she cries... Maria, Maria, always unfortunate. Never catch her glance, She’ll bring you misery!
