One morning Richard, a young painter, is visited by his friend Gerald. At this occasion Richard learns that Gerald's sister Maria has committed suicide. The two friends can't understand why she would have done that. Richard had often been talking to her on the phone, but never had he been able to speak to her face to face. The film shows the particular relationship between Richard and Maria.
