A Área – Das Gebiet

Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The small community of Vila Brandão is locked in fierce conflict with the neighbouring Bahia Yacht Club over ownership of A Área, ‘The Area’. Space is scarce and some inhabitants set up home directly on the disputed border between the two parties, a steep slope leading down to the beach, which the Bahia Yacht Club proceeds to forcefully clear. Nevertheless the people of Vila Brandão, especially the women—supported by a group of artists and a young female lawyer—defend they rights with courage and imagination. Amidst all this madness, children play, dance and tell stories.
